Life is hard, and it teaches us hard lessons. You probably know by now that there are somethings that just can’t be taught; you have to experience them for yourself in order to get the most out of it. Life is like that, it forces us to confront tough decisions and take whatever consequences arise from our actions. These hard life lessons need to be learned though, and there’s no other way to learn them except to simply live your life.
Who knows, you may even be confronted by a tough decision today that could impact the course of your life drastically. Instead of running from it, revel in the fact that you’ll come out of it with a greater understanding of life in general.
If you’ve recently learned a life lesson, check out these four brutal truths that life teaches us.
1. You Can’t Love Someone Without Loving Yourself
You may have heard someone say this before, but it isn’t something you can really learn or understand until you experience it yourself. If you don’t learn to love yourself or the person you are, you can’t really love anyone else. Conversely, you won’t ever be able to feel loved if you don’t love yourself.
This is why it’s never good to go from one relationship to the next without spending time alone. Get to know the person you are and be happy with that person before moving on.
2. Eventually, Old Age Will Strike
When you’re young, it’s easy to look at elderly people with a bit of apprehension. They symbolize a generation that’s on its way out, which is a truth that people rarely want to face or admit.
The fact is, we’re all going to get old, we’re all going to need help functioning throughout the day, and we’re all going to look unattractive in the eyes of culture we live in. This isn’t something any young person will understand until it strikes, which will come sooner than you think.
3. Love isn’t Logical
Have you ever been in a relationship with someone that simply doesn’t make sense? That’s because love itself doesn’t really make any sense. If you’ve ever truly been in love, you know that logic doesn’t really have much to do with it; it’s your feelings that drive you to make important decisions within your relationship.
You can’t “figure it out,” you have to use empathy, intuition, vulnerability, and honesty. This is a lesson that requires hindsight more often than not.
4. You Can’t Change Other People
You can’t change the people you surround yourself with, so there’s really no point in trying. The fact of the matter is, if you don’t like the way a person thinks, acts, or talks around you, you’re either going to have to deal with it, or make a change yourself. You’ll never be able to make a person fit your mold of the ideal individual.
This is a lesson that some people have to learn over and over again before they finally figure it out. However, it can be one of the most important life lessons to learn; the earlier you learn it, the happier you will be.
Most importantly, the easier it will be to be happy in a relationship.
